Puppy Protection: What’s the Duration of Validity?
In regards to how long puppy protection lasts among dogs, another important thing is that unconditional consideration only applies when strangers are present.
The issue of puppy-protection isn’t relevant to owners of new puppies in principle. Small dogs can only benefit from this protection if they are with their family – which is usually the breeder – and by the time the dog moves to its new family it’s usually too old.
This is the maximum period of protection for puppies.
For them to still be eligible for puppy protection they have to be under 14 weeks old or just over 3 months. Around eight weeks old, an older dog can put a cocky puppy in his place, but without biting him. After the first fourteen weeks, relatives of puppies expect the pups to follow the dog’s behavior rules.
Only in your own pack
Most people misunderstand Puppy Protection as a free ride. The puppy is safe because older dogs are considerate of him. This applies even if the pup is impatient or pushy. Since puppy protection is a behavior which serves to preserve the species in a breed, only dogs of the same pack will naturally show consideration.
Strange dogs should be avoided
It’s important to take good care of your puppy, socialize him, and train him properly. You should still be cautious when your dog is outside or with other dogs, even if he has puppy protection. Some puppies seem to own the world. It can be a dog that is already going against the grain.
Ask the owner of your other four-legged companion if they have any experience with dealing with puppies. Injury caused by a dog that is angry is very unlikely, but it’s not impossible.
It is therefore best to keep foreign aggressive dogs at a distance so that there will not be a fight between your puppy and him. Remember: protecting your puppy is not free.
