Training Your Dog to ‘Give Paw’: Here’s How It’s Done.
Do you want to teach your dog the “give paw” gesture? No need for anxiety – it is a straightforward process and could even prove useful at times like visits to the veterinarian! Read here how you can teach this classic greeting.
Most dogs learn how to give paws quickly; however, if your four-legged friend has arthritis or joint issues in its front legs, consult a veterinarian as this movement could be painful or counterproductive for them. Otherwise, this trick can be taught and practiced with any breed and age of pet.
How to teach “give paw.” Stage One.
Once your pup has learned how to “sit,” the first step towards training your pet to give paw is complete. Here is what you should keep in mind when training them:
Make sure that all of the attention of your furry friend is focused solely on you and avoid any distractions or disturbances that might interrupt this relationship.
Step Two of Teaching “Giving Paw.”
Kneel or sit in front of your dog with the treat in your hand and extend it a small distance above his nose. If your best friend nibbles, continue holding onto it – only when four-legged friend attempts to bring down hand with their paw, do you react. Say “Give Paw”, praise your dog, and then hand him treat directly.
Tip: Even small efforts should be praised. So if your dog lifts his paw only slightly, be sure to show your appreciation with praise.
How your dog learns to “give paw”: Stage Three
Soon enough, your dog will connect the command “Giving Paw” to an appropriate paw movement and reward it with treats. Sooner rather than later, though, all it will take to have his paw offered without needing a reward or incentive – just by giving the command.
Tip: No dog enjoys having its paw held at first. So give your furry pal plenty of time to adjust and become comfortable.
